Travelers in the nineteenth-century were blown away by Tromø’s women, fashion, food and culture. In admiration they dubbed Tromso “The Paris of the North”. Around the year 1900 the poet Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson, who wrote the lyrics to Norway’s national anthem, told his wife that Tromso is "nothing but champagne and spectacle."

The lovely churches Arctic Cathedral and Tromso Cathedral are all open year round and can be visited at any time.
